May 18, 1980 Gwangju KoreaAfter the assassination of Bak Coinğ Hi in 1979, the new government took action to take power. The Korean people did not want democracy to suffer any more, and protests led by young people began all over the country. The army seized power. They said their aim was to suppress student and worker actions. Unarmed activists were shot at, tortured, and countless people were arrested. The events that lasted nine days left thousands of injured and hundreds of dead, the number of which is still not fully determined. The events went down in the history of democracy under the name Gwangju Uprising.Han Kang writes from the fine line between the dead and the living dead they left behind.
