Theaetetus Penguin Classics Paperback – 26 Mar. 1987

**** Plato's "Theaetetus," a cornerstone of epistemology first penned in the 4th century BC, continues to intrigue and challenge readers with its exploration of the nature of knowledge. This Penguin Classics edition stands out, thanks to its thoughtful translation and comprehensive commentary, although it remains a demanding read. For many, the experience of engaging with this text is akin to wandering through a philosophical maze. While the dialogue features rich imagery, such as Socrates as a midwife and the metaphor of knowledge as a wax tablet, readers often find themselves perplexed by its technical nature. Those who venture into "Theaetetus" will appreciate the depth of thought and the historical context laid out in the accompanying essays. However, the structure—where commentary is separated from the text—can lead to a somewhat disjointed reading experience. Despite its complexities, the value of this dialogue lies in its foundational contributions to the discourse of knowledge. The translation is deemed approachable, making it relatively readable, particularly with the aid of additional resources like podcasts and secondary literature that provide context and clarity. Readers of this edition often express a deep appreciation for its intellectual rigor, understanding that it is a significant work that frames many modern philosophical discussions. The book does celebrate Plato's efforts in navigating difficult concepts and inviting readers to participate deeply in philosophical inquiry. As such, "Theaetetus" is viewed as essential reading for those interested in the roots of epistemology and the evolution of philosophical thought. **
